We are an agricultural production and food trading holding company.
Euricom Group was born in 1970 from the passion, dedication and sacrifices of Francesco Sempio together with the good friend Giuseppe Nervi, both great entrepreneurs and connoisseurs of the typical Lomellina product: rice. Today Euricom is managed with the same visionary spirit by the second generation: Bruno Sempio, Francesco’s son, became president in 2013.
Our headquarters is in Valle Lomellina, in the heart of a historic area of rice cultivation in Italy, an area which remains unsurpassed for quality production capacity.
We operate worldwide as producers of private-label foods - for large retail chains - and as rice suppliers for the food industry. We are the leading European rice-growing group and one of the top five players worldwide.
Over the years, Euricom Group has expanded its trading activities, extending its interest to other sectors of primary goods production, the energy sector and engineering.
We are a lively and constantly growing reality, thanks to strategic acquisitions and joint ventures in order to strengthen our presence on the European and international market. We are always looking towards the supply needs of the countries, the technological innovations and the taste of the final consumer.
Our business is in constant evolution to increase the Group presence on the market and enhance the characteristics that make us unique. Our global vision is the result of a 360-degree control on the supply chain, where we can guarantee high quality standards in every step, thanks to a constant certification work.
From the beginning of our history, we commit ourselves to improve what we wish to offer the world: the best of ourselves.
Our deep knowledge of the raw material - handed down from father to son - together with the production capacity, the transformation of the product and its packaging, the trading activity up to the arrival of the product to the consumer, successfully demonstrate the strategic importance of maintain global control over all the steps in the supply chain.
Our mission is to maintain a global dimension in agribusiness, affirming our European leadership with the added value of a strong commitment to sustainability that positively reflects the satisfaction of our customers' needs, maintaining a high level of certifications related to environmental mechanisms, limiting pollution in the productive area, respecting local productions, promoting the research and development of eco-friendly materials, guaranteeing respect for the people who collaborate with us and constantly improving internal services to give increasing value to the working environment.
Francesco Sempio was born in a Pavese family of farmers who cultivated rice, corn and wheat. He lost his father at the age of 16 and in a short time decided to take part in family business rather than continuing his studies. He says of himself: “I was born in Lomellina, a land that produces rice and geese. Just thirty square kilometres between the provinces of Pavia, Vercelli and Alessandria, yet rice made us relevant.
Francesco Sempio built his first rice mill in Cassolnovo, in the Magazzini Generali Vigevanesi manufacturing area. It is a small rice mill that only processes raw seeds and he called it European Rice by Sempio Francesco. He was personally involved in the production, taking turns with a worker, to run the plant in 24 hours. The product was all exported, mainly to Germany and the Netherlands, along with 3-5 daily paddy cars leaving from Trecate (NO) station to the Euriza company.
Francesco Sempio joined forces with the German-Dutch company Euriza to found Eurico S.p.A. In a short time, the company became a market leader in the export and supply of food aid, participating in tenders sponsored by the Risi National Agency.
In the second half of the 1980s, Francesco Sempio founded a company together with Italiana Olii and Risi - at that time part of the Ferruzzi Group - with the aim of launching the business worldwide but the operation turned out to be disappointing and ended.
Francesco Sempio left the Ferruzzi Group and together with the good friend Giuseppe Nervi founded EURICOM S.p.A. a company that was already the owner of the Molini Certosa and Pasta Combattenti brands.
Francesco Sempio acquired Riseria Carlo Pigino and Figlio S.r.l. In that period the new GATT commercial agreements (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) entered into force and gradually reduced the price of rice imported into the European Community (on the basis of the principle of the most favoured nation). That event was crucial to determine the strategic choices of the Group. From that moment, the priorities for Euricom became: the penetration in the Italian market, the international expansion starting from all the European nations that have large areas dedicated to rice-growing, the diversification of the business activities starting from the pasta sector.
Euricom acquired Campiverdi S.r.l. a company with headquarters and production plant in Ferrara. The company, owner of the Campiverdi brand, had a consolidated position in the central-southern Italian market. That acquisition was an important experience that prepared Euricom for the acquisition of Curti, in 1994.
Euricom Group acquired SEAR s.a., a company with a processing plant near Lisbon and which held a significant share of the Portuguese market.
Euricom acquired Curti s.r.l. by the Nestlé Group, after the company - previously owned by Buitoni SpA - had been merged with Nestlé Italiana Spa. Curti owned the most important Italian rice refinery and one of the most important in the European Union and owned the historic Curtiriso brand.
Spain is the second largest producer of paddy rice in Europe. Euricom has access to this important market with the acquisition of Arcesa. The company has a huge industrial plant near Valencia.
Thanks to the experience gained with Pasta Combattenti and to the presence in the Greek rice sector, Francesco Sempio agreed with the Hon. Stavros Costantinides - an important Greek entrepreneur in the pasta sector - and founded Eurimac Sa with him. Eurimac was based in Kilkis, in the north of Greece. The two strategic partners - Euricom Group and Macvel - invested over 35 million euros for the construction of state-of-the-art facilities, including a pasta factory, a logistics centre, a mill for processing semolina and silos.
The growing demand coming from large retail chains across Europe, coupled with the need to expand Euricom's coverage of the French market. The two factors led to the acquisition of the Société Française des Riz de Choix SA, a company with headquarters within a short distance from Marseille.
In 1998, Italy and Spain increased the production of Indica rice, making the importation of this variety from Greece unnecessarily expensive, although it was a traditional crop of the country. The consequent strategic move of Euricom was to build a Euricom Hellas facility in Halastra, in one of the main Greek areas of rice cultivation.
Bruno, one of Francesco Sempio's two sons, started to participate in the Group's activities. After a degree in Political Science, he began to follow the facility and activities of Euricom Hellas, of which he helped define the commercial strategy and became member of the Board.
The acquisition of CORISO s.r.l. by Euricom Group took place in 2000. With that rice mill, the Group obtained one of the most technologically advanced production plants in the world for rice processing. The company has been specialized in the production of rice for B2B and industrial use by the most important multinationals (Kellogg’s, Muller, Dailycer). In the year of acquisition, Bruno Sempio took on the position of sole director, managing the commercial and production aspects; he currently holds the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
In 2001 Euricom S.p.A. established Euricom Habana, the company that carries out trading activities and acts as a commercial office in the Cuban market for Euricom S.p.A. The headquarters of Euricom Habana, in addition to being of great prestige, is fundamental for managing relations and relations with Cuban customers.
Euricom acquired the Sociadore agricultural company located in Camargue, in the delta of the Rhone. Sociadore is a relatively recently established farm.
Euricom Brasil was founded in 2008 by Euricom S.p.A. to enter the Brazilian market and ensure a stable presence in South America and the Caribbean area together with Euricom Habana. In 2011, the effectiveness of Euricom Brasil in pursuing its mission led the company to receive the ADVB award as a top exporting company in Brazil.
A new mill for the production of flour is inaugurated at the new Eurimac facility in Kilkis, Greece.
Eysselle, an agricultural society, was established in the delta of the Rhone in the Camargue.
On June 26, Bruno Sempio took the place of the father Francesco at the head of the Group; he took up the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors. At present he holds the majority of the shares of Euricom S.p.A..
Euricom obtained the UNI ISO 14064 which certifies the balance of CO2 emissions to zero. All CO2 emissions produced are offset by energy production from renewable sources.
